Economic and clinical burden of non-vertebral non-hip (Nvnh), vertebral and multiple fractures in postmenopausal women in the United Kingdom. Poster presented at IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis & 10th European Congress on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis; May 2010. Florence, Italy. [abstract] Osteoporos Int. 2010 May 1; 21(Suppl. 1):S96.

AIMS: To determine the incremental cost of health care and clinical outcomes in the 12 months following incident selected fractures [NVNHF, vertebral (VF) and multiple(MF)] in postmenopausal women in the UK.

METHODS: Cohort study of women aged ≥50 years with incident selected fractures, individually matched on age and comorbidity to women without fractures. Cohorts were identified from The Health Improvement Network database from 2001 to 2005.

Oglesby A, Sherif B, Odom D, Leahy M, Qian Y. Time and costs associated with preparing and administering zoledronic acid in patients with breast or prostate cancer and metastatic bone disease. Community Oncol. 2009 Nov 1;6(11):494-502.

This prospective time-and-motion study quantified total time and costs of intravenous administration of zoledronic acid in 68 patients with bone metastases secondary to breast (n = 42) or prostate cancer (n = 26) at 7 oncology clinics in the United States. Trained observers used stopwatches to record times for preinfusion tasks (vital signs, blood draw, and physical exam), zoledronic acid drug preparation, infusion tasks (hydration, prechemotherapy medications, chemotherapy infusion, and zoledronic acid infusion), and follow-up.

Tennis P, Rothman KJ, Bohn R, Tan H, Anthony MS, Zavras A, Calingaert B. Multiple myeloma and IV bisphosphonate are risk factors for osteonecrosis of the jaw. Poster presented at the 26th ICPE International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology & Therapeutic Risk Management; August 25, 2010. Brighton, United Kingdom. [abstract] Pharmacoepidemiol Drug Saf. 2010 Aug; 19(S1):S313-4.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous (IV) bisphosphonate (BPN) use is associated with claims for osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), but the applied claims codes have yet to be validated. Little is known about risk factors for ONJ incidence in patients unexposed to BPN.

OBJECTIVES: We validated potential ONJ cases by chart review to assess risk factors for ONJ and measure ONJ incidence rate (IR) in cancer patients.

Wise LA, Rothman KJ, Mikkelsen EM, Sorensen HT, Riis A, Hatch EE. An internet-based prospective study of body size and time-to-pregnancy. Hum Reprod. 2010 Jan 1;25(1):253-64.

Recent studies have shown that both female and male obesity may delay time-to-pregnancy (TTP). Little is known about central adiposity or weight gain and fecundability in women. We examined the association between anthropometric factors and TTP among 1651 Danish women participating in an internet-based prospective cohort study of pregnancy planners (2007-2008). We categorized body mass index (BMI = kg/m(2)) as underweight (= 35). We used discrete-time Cox regression to estimate fecundability ratios (FRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), controlling for potential confounders.

Ehrenstein V, Rothman KJ, Pedersen L, Hatch EE, Sorensen HT. Pregnancy-associated hypertensive disorders and adult cognitive function among Danish conscripts. Am J Epidemiol. 2009 Oct 15;170(8):1025-31.

The authors examined the association of gestational hypertensive disorders (hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia) with adult cognitive function among men born in 1978-1983 in a well-defined geographic area of northern Denmark. Data from the Danish Medical Birth Registry, the Danish National Registry of Patients, and draft board records were linked. Cognitive function was measured at conscription by using the Boerge Prien group intelligence test. Test scores were converted to the conventional IQ scale (mean = 100 (standard deviation, 15)). Low cognitive function was defined as IQ < 85.

Starke JR, Mucci L, Rothman KJ, Adami HO. Screening for prostate cancer remains controversial. BMJ. 2009 Sep 24;339(7724):b3601.

The introduction of prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing as a screening tool has transformed the clinical landscape of prostate cancer. Screening allows prostate cancer to be diagnosed many years earlier, offering hope that a newly detected cancer is still localised to the prostate when treatment is curative. However, screening has also led to considerable false positive results and extensive overdiagnosis of disease that would not otherwise emerge clinically. We summarise current screening guidelines and review the evidence of benefit and harm of PSA testing.

Naslund MJ, Gilsenan AW, Midkiff KD, Bown A, Wolford ET, Wang A. Prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms and prostate enlargement in the primary care setting. Int J Clin Pract. 2007 Sep 1;61(9):1437-45.

Purpose: Men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) from benign prostatic hyperplasia often do not discuss their symptoms with their primary care physicians (PCPs). The primary objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of LUTS, prostate enlargement, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) ? 1.5 ng/ml in men visiting their PCP and to assess patients' intent to discuss LUTS with their PCP.

Poster presented at the 24th ICPE International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology & Therapeutic Risk Management; September 9, 2008. Copenhagen, Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Men diagnosed with prostate cancer have higher rates of noncancer mortality than men in the general population which may or may not be related to treatment choices.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), coronary artery disease (CAD), congestive heart failure (CHF), stroke, and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Nørgaard M, Wogelius P, Pedersen L, Rothman KJ, Sørensen HT. Maternal use of oral contraceptives during early pregnancy and risk of hypospadias in male offspring. Urology. 2009 Sep;74(3):583-7.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between maternal use of oral contraceptives in early pregnancy and increased prevalence of hypospadias in male offspring.

METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based case-control study using data from nationwide medical databases. Among live male births between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 2005, we identified all cases of hypospadias recorded anytime postpartum (n = 1683) and randomly selected 10 controls per case without such a diagnosis (n = 15 650), matched by year and hospital of birth.
